Easter Eggs Rogaine III (4 HOURS)

The orienteering event that started it all, the Easter Eggs Rogaine, returns for its third installment!

Join us Saturday, April 3, 2021 for a 4-hour, timed orienteering race starting at 10:00am on a BRAND NEW MAP of the beautiful Valdese Lakeside Park

OVERVIEW

What is a Rogaine? It is a race format featuring a mass start where competitors must accumulate as many points as possible in a specified amount of time… in this case, 4 hours. Controls can be visited in any order, and are each assigned a variable point value. Points are automatically calculated by the timing software at the Finish. Once the time clock runs out, competitors who have not returned yet to the Finish are automatically penalized with a points deduction per minute they are late. Highest number of points is the winner.

This format requires as much strategy as it does strength and skill, so careful planning and time management is key.

Don’t be dissuaded, though… the format is suitable for orienteers of ALL SKILL LEVELS, as there are no DNFs (“did not finish”) assuming competitors find at least one control point. It is FAMILY FRIENDLY and (leashed) PET FRIENDLY.

DIFFICULTY

Valdese Lakeside Park has many miles of professionally built hiking trails which cover its 2 square kilometers. The terrain is hilly, but not as mountainous as what most WNCOC orienteers are used to.

The 1:7,500-scale, remotely generated map is not field checked for point features like rootstocks and boulders. The vast majority of the vegetation, earth features and waterways are accurate, and sufficient for navigation. It is derived from high resolution LiDAR and quite (amazingly) reliable in its green and contour mapping. A sample section of the base map is shown above.

The Rogaine format means you can go as fast or slowly as you like, in any direction you like… just be sure to make it back to the Finish before the cutoff at 2:00 P.M.!

FEES

• ADULTS – $15 per person (includes one finger stick – accompanied kids are free)

Please note! Pre-registration is REQUIRED and there is NO WALK-UP REGISTRATION. Due to a limited supply of timing devices, attendance at this event is capped at 40.

You can purchase tickets online in advance with a credit/debit card, but cash onsite is always welcome! If you’re planning to attend and want to pay in cash, please go through checkout the normal way and select “Cash onsite” as your payment method. This functions as an RSVP, ensures your finger stick is programmed with your name and your map is pre-printed and ready when you arrive (a little early, please!)
