Pi Day Scavenger Hunt and Pie Potluck

Welcome back for our first public event in two years…. since Hurricane Helene.

Date and Time

• Saturday, March 14, 2026 @ Lookout Brewing in Black Mountain
• Group ticket is good for up to 6 people
• 11:00AM – Check-in opens – if you are new, please arrive early
• 11:45AM – Race briefing begins, group photo
• 12:00 NOON – MASS START with a 5min perusal period beginning at 11:55am.
• Late starts are okay through 1:30PM
• 3:00PM – Course closes, please come back

Location and Parking

• Lookout Brewing Company is located at 103 South Ridgeway Ave in Black Mountain, NC
• Parking is free onsite
• Spillover parking is across the street at the school, or two blocks west in the public parking lot

Scavenger Hunt Format

• You will have 90 minutes to accumulate as many points as possible, choosing any route between up to 67 control locations, each bearing a points value.
• It’s easy to do, requires no experience, and is fun and challenging for all ages. Kids love it, so bring the family.
• Control locations will be marked in the field by a combination of traditional orange orienteering flags, small QR code tags that will be hidden from view, and GPS-only features, weighted according to their difficulty level. Returning late to the Finish results in an automatically assessed, per-minute points penalty.
• This is timed and scored using the free MapRun smartphone app which is required to participate.
• Bonus controls are hidden on the map and require solving a riddle to locate.
• Control locations will highlight the “best” Black Mountain has to offer, from astounding works of art to bizarre bits of graffiti and everything in between.

Pi Day Pie Potluck and BBQ

• Simple: bring a pie, and get back a bunch of pie.
• 12:00pm-3:00pm right inside Lookout Brewing!
• CAROLINA FUSION BBQ will also be onsite, so when you’re done scavenger hunting, you can pig out and drink beer like the indominable heroes that you are.

• MapRun runs on your Android or iPhone smartphone and is how we track, time, and score this event.

Waiver — In consideration of you accepting this entry, I, the participant, intending to be legally bound and hereby waive or release any and all right and claims for damages or injuries that I may have against the Meet Director, WNC Orienteering Club, Northline Navigation LLC, and all of their agents assisting with the activity, sponsors and their representatives and employees for any and all injuries to me or my personal property. This release includes all injuries and/or damages suffered by me before, during, or after the activity. I recognize, intend, and understand that this release is binding on my heirs, executors, administrators, or assignees. I also authorize the use of photographs or videos that include my image for promotional, informational, or other reasons deemed to be in the best interest of the activity. I certify as a material condition to my being permitted to enter this race that I am physically fit and sufficiently trained for the completion of this event and that my physical condition has been verified by a licensed Medical Doctor.
