Full of incredible architecture, steep winding hills and breathtaking views, this self guided tour challenges the legs and fascinates the mind.

MapRun is a smartphone orienteering app. You navigate through the real world with a paper map and compass. MapRun tracks your progress with GPS and keeps score of your session, beeping to indicate you’ve reached a feature. You can learn about MapRun here – https://maprunners.weebly.com/

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

  • Kenilworth is a historic residential neighborhood in Asheville perched atop a steep hill just east of Mission Hospital and north of Biltmore Village.
  • Kenilworth Park features a grassy field, a great kids’ playground, basketball, tennis courts, and (seasonal) restrooms.

  • The course is nicknamed, “Between Two Cemeteries,” as it’s situated between two historic burial grounds – the South Asheville Cemetery, Western North Carolina’s oldest slave cemetery and part of the NC Civil War Trails, and the Newton Academy Cemetery of the same era.

THE MAP

  • Mostly black and white with simplified street-O symbol set. Purists take heed – this map is custom and makes no effort to adhere to any ISOM standard.
  • Scale is 1:10,000 with 20-foot contour interval.
  • This activity takes place on public streets and you should never cut through private property. Possession of this map does not imply right of access. Use this map at your own risk, use your head, and be safe out there.

THE APP

  • MapRun runs on Android and iPhone, and is FREE
  • You can download and install MapRun here.
  • When you arrive to within 15 meters of a control point, the app beeps and vibrates to indicate you’ve “gotten” the control.
