FernLeaf Wilderness Campus Orienteering Race 2024

OVERVIEW

Join us for our first classic orienteering race on FernLeaf Community Charter School’s brand new Wilderness Campus Orienteering Map on Saturday morning, March 30, 2024.

• Designed for all (including zero) experience levels, this land navigation adventure lets you select from an array of courses ranging from beginner (short and easy) on up to expert level (long…and tough!)
• Begin your chosen course any time during the start window between 10am and 11am.
• Timing will be electronic using SPORTident finger sticks like we’ve done in the past at our Creek Campus’ FAD Races. (Results and pics from that great event are here.)
• It’s the THINKING SPORT!

THE MAP

• Field-checked orienteering map at 1:4000 scale with a 5 meter contour interval
• The Wilderness Campus is a feature-rich wooded forest, rugged and wild, full of boulders, dry ditches, and thickets.
• Unlike FernLeaf’s Creek Campus, which is completely flat, the Wilderness Campus is NOT FLAT.

DATE AND TIME

• Saturday, March 30, 2024
• Check-in opens – 9:30am
• Start window opens – 10:00am
• Start window closes – 11:00am
• All courses close – 1:00pm

COURSES

• Select your course at registration (you can change your mind, but let us know ahead of time.)
• WHITE (Beginner short distance) 7 Controls, 1.1km
• YELLOW (Beginner not as short distance) 10 Controls, 1.7km
• ORANGE (Intermediate middle distance) 20 Controls 2.7km
• RED (Expert long distance) 21 Controls, 3.4km
• PLAID (Ludicrous long distance) 25 Controls, 4.1km
• Don’t be fooled by these relatively short course lengths. Climbing and difficulty increases exponentially from WHITE to PLAID.
• For finishers who simply cannot get enough and need more orienteering right away, there will be a BONUS SCATTER course available, in which all controls are in play and can be found in any order within a specified duration TBD.

• Tickets are available now through EVENTBRITE for this FernLeaf-sponsored event.
• Proceeds from this event go towards growing FernLeaf’s exceptional outdoor and adventure programs — thank you for your support!
• Individual participant – $25 – includes one waterproof Rite-in-the-Rain paper course map and one electronic timing result.
• Group/Family/Team ticket – $40 (up to 6 people) – includes two waterproof Rite-in-the-Rain paper course maps and one electronic timing result.
